Mexico's newest member of the global Design Hotels portfolio is a 10-room hideaway in Troncones, 25 miles north of Zihuatanejo on a remote stretch of the Guerrero coast.

Hotel Review: Shangri-La, Vancouver

  • May 4, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
The Shangri-La Vancouver celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, yet this hotel still feels brand-new. The 119-room hotel occupies the first 15 floors of a stunning 62-story condominium tower in the heart of downtown. This was the first North American location for the Hong Kong-based luxury brand.

Hotel Review: Fairmont Chateau Whistler

  • April 27, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
The Fairmont Chateau opened 30 years ago at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, occupying the best ski-in/ski-out real estate of any hotel on the Blackcomb side of the Whistler Blackcomb resort. So how's it holding up now?

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai is one of the world’s true grande dames, a turn-of-the-century palace overlooking the iconic Gateway of India in Apollo Bunder. Here's a quick look at this legendary hotel, which is now the subject of a new film called Hotel Mumbai.

Review: Hotel Joaquin, Laguna Beach

  • February 1, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
The 22-room Hotel Joaquin is probably the best bargain in Laguna Beach, and certainly one of the hippest hotels in town with literally zero attitude. It’s not directly on the beach, but it’s just a three-minute walk down the hill.

Review: Hotel Columbia, Telluride

  • January 21, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
The Hotel Columbia sits directly across the street from the Telluride gondola, making this the best-located luxury hotel in town. Whether you ski or not, winter or summer, being close…

Review: Hotel Figueroa, Los Angeles

  • January 18, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
It took a massive three-year, top-to-bottom, inside-out refurbishment to bring the Hotel Figueroa back from the brink. And what an incredible transformation. This is now one of the sexiest and, frankly, best hotels in downtown Los Angeles.

Review: Hotel Emma, San Antonio

  • January 5, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
Hotel Emma is the nicest hotel in San Antonio. Period. Emma’s arrival in 2015 was long over due. San Antonio has consistently ranked among the top domestic destinations for conventions…

Review: The Line Hotel, Austin

  • January 4, 2019
  • Brad A. Johnson
Like the original Line in Los Angeles, this new Austin outpost also occupies a beautifully restored vintage property with archetypal mid-century pedigree. The views of Town Lake are exactly the same as you would get at the Four Seasons.

Review: Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown

  • October 28, 2018
  • Brad A. Johnson
The 73-story Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown is the tallest building west of Chicago. It’s the highest hotel in the city — and the reigning most-talked-about skyscraper of L.A.’s rapidly expanding downtown skyline.

Cancún’s original grande dame changed its banner from The Ritz-Carlton to Kempinski during the pandemic, but little else has changed (except maybe some upgraded furniture in the rooms and a fresh coat of paint). Posh as ever. Lovely beach. Same staff. Same owner, whose classical art collection alone is worth a look if you've never seen it. You would wander the halls for days looking at art at this hotel. Old-money Cancún at its finest. 45 3
Serenity. Checked into the new @waldorfastoriacancun on the outskirts of Cancún for a little pampering. It's lovely. A world away from the hectic hotel zone. I felt like I had the entire hotel to myself. 69 2
Cochinita pibil with black-bean soup and wood-fired tortillas at @kinichizamal. Tasty detour. 61 3
Nobody walks more than a block or two in Espita. Hardly anyone drives. Motorized trishaws are the preferred mode of transport. That last photo is the country road to Espita, which is located about halfway between Merida and Tulum in the Yucatán. 54 0
Is this the prettiest avocado toast you've ever seen or what? That tiny spoonful of chile oil on the right side is more than enough. A perfect breakfast by @chef.jorgeildefonso and chef @_josehauvidal at @casonadeloscedros_restaurante in Espita, Yucatán. 45 0
In the middle of seemingly nowhere in the Yucatán jungle you'll find the small, traditional pueblo of Espita, and that's where you'll find @casonadeloscedros_restaurante, an incredible little restaurant by @chef.jorgeildefonso (with chef @_josehauvidal on the pass), tucked inside an amazingly charming inn. This is essentially the only restaurant in town, and it is the very reason to make the journey. 116 5
