Slideshow: London’s Poshest British Grills

  • March 25, 2026
  • Brad A. Johnson
The spring 2026 issue of OLTRE officially launches today. For my column in this issue, I wrote about the fascinating rebirth of London’s silver-service grills. London in recent years has become one of the best cities in the world for restaurants — for everything from Indian (far better than what I’ve ever found in India) to modern, wood-fired Thai cuisine. But it’s this recent renaissance of grand British dining that excites me most right now. I’m talking about proper beef Wellington and Sunday roasts carved table-side, luxurious Dover sole, exquisite Orkney Island scallops, revelatory meat pies and seasonal British produce, cheese, wine and more. There has never been a prouder moment for British cooking than what’s happening right now in London’s poshest grills.

Most of these dining rooms reside inside the luxurious hotels of Mayfair, Belgravia and Westminster — The Dorchester, The Connaught, The Lanesborough, for example — but it’s a revival that reaches deep into the independent restaurant scene as well, at places like The Guinea in Mayfair or the new upstairs grill room at The Devonshire in Soho. There is simply nowhere else in the world to dine like this. And a strong sense of place is always important to me when traveling. Check out this slideshow for an abbreviated visual tour:
