Zadun, San Jose del Cabo

Quick Review: Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

  • August 2, 2024

I finally got around to visiting Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, in Los Cabos. This resort had been on my to-do list since its opening in 2019, but somehow it kept evading my plans. On my recent weekend trip to Four Seasons Cabo San Lucas, I tacked on one extra night for Zadún. I had less than 24 hours onsite — and it was raining half of that time — so this was a very quick review, indeed.

Zadún is on the far end of San Jose del Cabo, very near Acre Baja, surrounded by farmland on one side, the beach on the other. I stayed in a partial-ocean-view terrace suite with a plunge pool. The doors/windows on two sides of the suite could be folded away, creating a massive indoor/outdoor living space, nearly 1,000 square feet. It was too hot and humid for that, though, so we kept the doors shut and the A/C blasting. (But in fall/winter/spring, oh my.)  These are truly beautiful accommodations: huge closets and bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, oversized tub, chaise, dining set and two separate outdoor living areas. And it’s all very, very private. The beds are classic Ritz-Carlton soft, which is always softer than my ideal bedding, but the linens and pillows were so luxurious that I really didn’t mind.

Because of the rain, the main breakfast/lunch restaurant, El Barrio, was closed. El Barrio is almost entirely outdoors, so when it rains, they shut it down and move operations up the hill to Humo, which is normally open only for dinner. I did get to enjoy a taco and cocktail at Equis, as well as dinner at Humo. Both were fantastic. The former is super-casual outdoor bar (slightly covered) adjacent to the beach. The latter is the resort’s signature restaurant, a wood-fire steakhouse and modern, Latin-American/Argentine kitchen. I don’t believe I have ever tasted a better picanha steak that what I enjoyed here.

Upon check-in, we were assigned a dedicated butler team, similar to Ritz-Carlton’s sister brand St. Regis. And the service was always quick, friendly and professional. My only minor quibble: Our suite was pretty far from the restaurants and resort center, and the hills are way too steep, far too many steps, to walk back and forth on a hot day — particularly the trek back up the hill. And while buggy service is complimentary, it can sometimes take 15 minutes or more for your ride to arrive. First-world problems, I know.

Bottom line: I’ll be back. The rooms are truly beautiful, and the food at both Humo and Equis was terrific. I can’t wait to try El Barrio.
