Quick Look: Our Habitas Tulum

I was convinced in recent years that Tulum had jumped the shark. But then a new resort opened that completely restored my faith in this southernmost region of Mexico’s Rivera Maya. Our Habitas poignantly captures that relaxed, carefree spirit of the Mexican Caribbean I originally fell in love with in the 1990s — a time when the road from Cancún was still made of dirt, and only one “hotel” in town had electricity but no air-conditioning. That was long before the New Yorkers invaded and turned Tulum into a mini Cancún.

Our Habitas is an under-the-radar glamping resort comprised of 42 stilted, air-conditioned tents with canvas walls and roofs, wooden porches and outdoor bathrooms (not just the showers but the toilets, too, entirely private of course). To be clear: This is not ultra-luxury Riviera Maya. Rather, this is old-ways Tulum, with a modern twist. Here’s a quick look around:
