Photo of the Week: Rocky Creek Bridge, Big Sur, California

  • December 14, 2021

This is the Rocky Creek Bridge on California’s Big Sur Coast, about 12 miles south of Carmel. The bridge opened in 1932 in tandem with its more famous sibling, the Bixby Creek Bridge, a mile south.

The plan was to photograph the Bixby Creek Bridge, something I’ve been wanting to do for years. But it was a busy holiday weekend and there simply wasn’t any place left to park on the side of the road. Fortunately I had already made an impromptu stop one minute earlier at Rocky Creek to snap this shot, so I didn’t feel too bad about missing out on Bixby.

This was my third road-trip on Highway One. It never gets any easier, all those white-knickled hairpin curves, mostly without guardrails. But the beauty of California’s Big Sur never gets old. This is without a doubt one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the world.

This is the new Lao restaurant in Westminster that everyone will soon be talking about. The pork sausages, the barbecue chicken thighs, the sticky rice, the khao piak (Lao chicken noodle soup)... Link in stories. 179 5
