Mexico Earthquake Relief: How You Can Help.

  • September 24, 2017
  • Brad A. Johnson

My heart aches for Mexico right now. The recent earthquakes have taken a mighty toll. A lot of people are hurting. If you want to help, here’s how:

Topos (site in Spanish)
You might have seen these amazing heroes on TV. Topos de Tlateloco was founded after the devastating 1985 earthquake in Mexico. This is a nonprofit rescue brigade that has since performed earthquake rescues around the world. They have been at the forefront of the most harrowing rescues in Mexico this year. You can donate on their website, which is published only in Spanish. Or you can very simply donate via PayPal by using their email address: donativos@brigada-rescate-topos-org.

Unicef
Actress Salma Hayek has created an earthquake assistance fund on Crowdrise, which is being funneled into Unicef Mexico’s relief efforts. She personally contributed $200,000, and her contribution was generously matched by the George Harrison foundation.

Red Cross Mexico
Pop star Shawn Mendes has also launched a Crowdrise campaign. His effort partners with Red Cross. The singer was in Mexico City rehearsing for a concert when the earthquake hit. He has personally donated $100,000 to the fund. You can donate specifically to the victims of Mexico City quake here, as well as the victims of the Chiapas and Oaxaca earthquakes here.

Oxfam Mexico
This international nonprofit is also focusing on Mexico earthquake relief right now. You can give here.

Project Paz
The Americano hotel in New York City (owned by Grupo Habita, one of my favorite hotel brands based in Mexico City) has partnered with Project Paz, which is helping victims of the earthquakes in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla and Mexico State. Meanwhile, Grupo Habita’s hotels in Mexico City are deeply involved in that city’s massive community outreach.

Big thanks also to Apple and Facebook, each of which has donated $1 million. There’s a lot of work to be done, a lot of people hurting. Please give whatever you can.
